Kids talk

I was in a supermarket the other day just randomly pottering when I saw, a young mum coming towards me holding the hand of a child who was probably about 4 years old. The child was chatting in an animated way to his mother telling her something she patently already knew 'Mummy, potatoes don't grow on trees, they grow under the ground!!'. To which mother duly replied 'gosh, isn't that amazing, can you think of anything else that grows under the ground?' (gently steering him towards the carrots and parsnips)

I smiled.  It seems to me that part of good parenting is letting your children tell you things which they have just discovered as though you never knew it before. Why?  Because we instinctively know that success breeds confidence, that our kids need to feel proud of themselves and that allowing them to feel smart and clever and involved in the grown up world actually helps achieve those very things.

I think God is like that with us 😊

We chatter away to Him, telling Him things He already knows, explaining what we need and want when He's already got it all in hand. But He lovingly listens and talks to us and let's us grow in confidence and agency because He is a good good Father.
